Car Club Feature: Dallas Area Classic Chevys

The Dallas Area Classic Chevys organized in the spring of 1976, after founder Greg Easley placed an ad in the Dallas Morning News, inviting all 1955, 1956 and 1957 Chevy owners to meet and possibly form a car club.

It was then that the club was formed, and it has continued for over 30 years.  Today, it is one of the largest exclusive ‘Tri Five’ Chevy clubs in the world.  Over 150 members from all over the North Texas area have a devoted passion for all of the mid-fifty Chevys including, not only the passenger cars but also Corvettes and pick-ups.

Club members enjoy their Chevys in a variety of ways: some like to race them; some prefer to make road trips with theirs; some will only show theirs at organized car shows; others like to work and tinker on them all the time; and, some like to simply drive them as much as they can!  In the club, you will find members who completely restore their cars just as they roll off the assembly line, while others modify their car to their personal taste and comfort levels.  The bottom line is that we all simply love these old Chevys and enjoy sharing them with others in the area.

Looking back at the history of the club, the Dallas Area Classic Chevys (DACC) has hosted several major events that focus on the ’55-’57 Chevy.  It was in 1979 that the now-defunct Classic Chevy Club brought a regional convention to town, that DACC hosted. And, then several years later, we followed that with a national convention, in 1985.  Then, it was in 1991 that DACC hosted its largest event: the International Classic Chevy Convention – a week long celebration of the mid-fifty Chevys that brought enthusiasts from all over the world to Dallas.

Most recently, in 2006, the club hosted the 24th Annual Lone Star Classic Chevy Convention, a rotating event shared by Classic Chevy Clubs in Texas (more info at www.LoneStarChevys.com).

One thing for sure: if you enjoy your ‘Tri Five Chevy’ then membership in the club is mandatory!

Each month, the club participates in at least one event that can include a day-long driving trip or big club displays at the indoor winter car shows in Dallas and Ft. Worth. Members can drag race their cars in a season-long Car Club Challenge series, or we simply meet at one of the many parking lot shows in the area.  We also meet at 50's-era places, like the Brazos Drive-in movie theatre in Granbury, Tex., Frosty Drive N diner in Denton, Tex. and the restored Uptown Theatre in Grand Prairie, Tex.– all of these originally built in the 50’s and still kicking just like our cars!

One thing that we really enjoy doing each Christmas season does not involve old cars, at all – this being constructing wheelchair ramps for the handicapped at their homes. Working with a local agency, our members travel to a home of a wheelchair-bound occupant. And, when we leave, that person will be able to get in and out of their home, using the ramp our members built.

Another great benefit of the club membership is the assistance a person can get from fellow club members when it comes to their shoebox Chevy.  Whether it’s a quick question or help with a complete restoration, members in the club are there to help.

Recently, a member became ill and was in the middle of a frame off restoration of a 1957 Chevrolet convertible.  Over a period of several months, members helped get the car completed and finished, which would never have been possible without the help of the club.  The club has several designated ‘Tech Advisors’ whom members may contact, should they find themselves stumped with a project on their Chevy.

We also enjoy the support of sponsors: Reliable Chevrolet in Richardson, Tex. and Wilson Auto Repair in Garland, Tex.  Reliable Chevrolet recognized the heritage of these cars to Chevrolet and chose to support the club, and Wilson Auto Repair is an ‘Old Car Friendly’ repair and restoration shop in the area.

We welcome all enthusiasts of ’55-’57 Chevys to join us, and we enjoy swapping newsletters with other ‘Tri Five’ clubs.  You can find us on the internet at www.DallasClassicChevy.com .
