Sharon Green joined the Grundy Worldwide team, in 1997, after interviewing for a receptionist job with the company’s President, Jim Grundy. A dozen years and a few office-location switches later, Sharon says that she has witnessed both the business flow and staff grow three-fold. But, one thing has remained the same— and, that is Sharon’s voice on the other end of the line when a customer calls Grundy Worldwide.
“I’ve always liked being the receptionist, because I like talk to all the different people,” says Sharon. “It’s an experience in itself.”
Sharon began working in the insurance industry, after relocating from Upstate New York to the Philadelphia area, in the early 1990’s; her husband’s career determined that change of location. In New York, Sharon had served as the receptionist at a large accounting firm for ten years. After moving to Pennsylvania, she worked as a receptionist at a Philadelphia-based insurance agency, for five years, before starting her position at Grundy.
She says that throughout her years as the Grundy receptionist, she has built lasting relationships with many customers and brokers, alike, while directing incoming calls.
“At Grundy Worldwide, we are proud that our customers reach a real, live person on the opposite end of the phone,” says Sharon. “And, I enjoy being that person.”
In addition to answering the phone and directing calls to the appropriate representatives, Sharon also holds various responsibilities. She helps to inspire the entire Grundy staff, each morning, by selecting a motivational quote to read over the intercom, and she greets all of the walk-in clientele, as well. Sharon also helps open and separate each application and piece of mail that comes to the office building, located in Horsham, Pa.
She says that with each piece of mail that comes through the office, she has had the opportunity to see photographs of amazing vehicles.
Before starting her position at Grundy Worldwide, Sharon was passionate about sports cars; she says that she learned a great deal about various cars from an old friend— Alfa Romeos, Aston Martins, MGs, Jaguars and Corvettes, to name some. She had opportunities to drive in some of these cool rides throughout her lifetime. |
Sharon says that while she still likes foreign sports cars, after spending time at Grundy, she has grown especially fond of classic and antique cars; she says that her preference is for cars that she says are “eloquent.” She particularly favors the likes of Duesenberg, Rolls Royce and old Bentleys.
“That’s my taste,” she says. “They are gorgeous cars.”
Sharon adds that if she could get her hands on her very own collector vehicle, it would be a Morgan.
For now, Sharon does not own her own collector vehicle; however, she enjoys looking at the various vehicles when she opens the mail, each day. In fact, she says that she enjoys every aspect of her position.
“This is just a great place to work,” says Sharon. “Mr. Grundy has been so great to me and wonderful to work for. After twelve years, I am still the front receptionist. I love our clients, and I like speaking to the many customers that have called over the years. And, I’ve also made some great friends through work, as well.”
Sharon adds that she still works with many of the people who worked at Grundy when she first started her position.
She goes on to say that this year was a particularly memorable one. With the inclusion of company barbeques, she began to see more camaraderie growing amongst her co-workers. Sharon says that she thinks that the addition of the inspirational morning quotes, an office “brag board” and motivational seminars also aided in enhancing interpersonal relationships within the office.
“While this is a fast-paced atmosphere, we can still enjoy ourselves,” she adds. “It can even be comical at times.”
For example, when her co-workers stumbled across the above photo of Sharon, last year, they framed it and deemed her as “Employee of the Month.” She says that the framed picture was placed on the front desk, for all visitors to see. She adds that it stayed there for about six months.
“And, the best part of this year was dunking Mr. Grundy in the dunk tank at our recent Labor Day picnic,” adds Sharon, with a chuckle. “After several people had attempted, I was the only one to do it. And, it was on my first try!”
